Mayfield Build Announcement

Our next Blitz Build will be a special one for Blitz Home Builders as we celebrate our 20th anniversary as BHB!  To mark the occasion, we are honoring our founding roots by partnering with the Mayfield, Kentucky Fuller Center for Housing as they continue to rebuild their town following the devastation caused by an EF4 tornado (166 to 200 mph winds) that tore through the center of town in December, 2021.

Where, When, Etc.

The key dates to know are:
Prebuild (for House and Team Leads):          Monday, June 10, 2024
Build Start (All Volunteers):                          Tuesday, June 11, 2024
BHB Annual Dinner:                                      Saturday, June15, 2024
House Dedications:                                         Friday, June 21, 2024

You can expect to receive instructions from us to register for this build before the Christmas Holiday.  Please reserve these dates on your calendar if you would like to participate in the upcoming build.  Please note: we expect to have a lot of interest in this build.  Please respond to your registration invitation in a timely manner as we may be forced to limit registration to first come, first served if we receive too many requests.

We expect Registration to cost about $100.  As usual, this includes T-shirt, BHB Annual Dinner, text messaging services, and BHB administrative costs.

We have not picked a hotel, yet, but we expect rooms will be in the range $50 to $60 per person per night.

Past experience has shown you should plan on approximately $20-$25 per person per day for food.  We will be working with the Fuller Center to get some of our meals provided or discounted through donations from local businesses and organizations.  As usual, lunches and snacks at the construction site will be provided at no charge to you.

This year, inspired by our Fuller Center partners, we are trying something new.  Given the struggles Mayfield faces, we will be providing an opportunity for you to make a cash donation to the rebuilding effort through the local Covenant Partner.  We also feel this is a private decision and therefore we will be leaving it to you to decide if and how much you want to donate to the cause.  We will have details on how to do this when we send out registration information in December.

The nearest airport with connections to major cities is Barkley Regional Airport in West Paducah, KY, about a 35 minute drive from Mayfield.  You may also choose to fly into St. Louis, Memphis, or Nashville.

Build Plan

We are expecting to follow the same plan we followed last year in Columbia, Missouri.  During the first week, we will frame and dry-in four houses.  Then, the following week, we will move over to four other houses that are drywalled and ready for the finish work.  This work plan removes historically difficult-to-schedule electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and drywall work so that we can move rapidly through the finish work in a predictable manner.

Our Partners

This is the first time we will be working with the Fuller Center for Housing.  This organization was founded by Millard Fuller, the man who founded Habitat For Humanity.  As a national organization located in Americus, Georga, it has sponsored its own blitz builds for many years, drawing on volunteers from across the country to blitz build more than 130 homes.  The national organization is lending its support to this build by helping the Mayfield Covenant Partner prepare to host an event of this magnitude.  They are also alerting their national volunteers to the build opportunity which will introduce some new people to BHB, as well as, introduce BHB to the Fuller Center community.

In order to address the local community needs for low cost housing in the coming years, the Mayfield-Graves Fuller Center Covenant Partner has a big job ahead of itself.  Our efforts will directly help address the need for low cost housing in the Mayfield area and will also help grow the philanthropic and volunteer bases as well.

You can find out more about the Fuller Center at their website (https://fullercenter.org)

Wrap Up

Planning these events takes a lot of time and effort by the Planning Committee.  One of the first things we need to know is how many volunteers will be attending in order for us to arrange for lodging, meals, venues, caterers, and, yes, even the construction materials and tools.   Your early registration is an important part of this effort.  Please help us by completing your registration as quickly as possible once registration opens.

Looking forward for the build in June 2024. I started volunteering with Habitat in 1983 to present and the Fuller Center in 2006 to present.
