[10/1/2007] Post-Build UpdateI was back in Portland last weekend and i had a chance to stop by the Blitz houses. The houses look great, they have the landscaping in, fences up, windows coverings hung and really look like homes. The family from house 1, Millie, Marcos and kids, was there when i stopped by and they were very happy to see us. They invited us right in to their homes like we never left. They are all very appreciative of what we all did.I also talked to some of the Habitat Staff and local volunteers that helped us. They all say hello and thank you, so i am passing that on. It was a great trip and i can't wait until next year! -Greg Shaffer [6/27/2007] Day 5 -- Siding and PaintingProgress pictures needed Wednesday and more siding work. The completed siding walls got a coat of paint with contrasting trim. Interior primer was sprayed on as well as the first coat of the finish interior paint. Again, contrasting colors to take it up a notch. [6/26/2007] Day 4 -- Drywall, Siding, & Porch DeckingProgress pictures needed Tuesday the interior of the house starts taking shape with the drywall going up. Lids or ceilings first, then the walls. Continuing work on the siding and the porch decks were pretty much completed. [6/25/2007] Day 3 -- What y'all standin' around for, back to work!Monday back to work. The trades (plumbers, electricians, and HVAC crews worked the weekend and are finishing up rough-in today. Volunteers need to work outside shingling the roof and getting the siding started. In addition, the porch framing needs to be completed. By the end of the day, the trades were done and drywall was loaded into the houses for tomorrow's fun. [6/24/2007] Day Off -- R & RSunday is a day of rest for us. Folks went various ways to tour Portland, OR. There's the aircraft museum, the Columbia River, Portland International Raceway, and of course there are one or two micro-breweries. [6/23/2007] Day 2 -- Dry-InToday's major task is to get the house dried in. Roof sheeted and "tar" papered as well as getting the house wrap on and the windows and doors installed. Only had to change the size of one of the windows due to a difference in the available window and the plans. [6/22/2007] Day 1 -- WallsThe first official blitz build day and the task is to get the exterior walls up, capped and marked so the trusses can be loaded when the crane arrives around noon. The afternoon is for interior walls and truss rolling. [6/21/2007] Day 0 -- Pre-BuildThe final day of preparation for this year's build. Layout of the walls on the floor and plates was the main task for today. Flip the house 180 from the plans then figure 4'-3 3/8" + 3'-2 1/16 - 3 1/2" to find the location of the first window on the side wall... In addition, to all the mental gymnastics we needed to pre-cut and assemble headers and trimmers. After that, it was on to wall building. Most interior and exterior walls were completed but standing the walls was to be left for the larger group arriving on Friday.

Blitz Home Builders Planning Comitee [4/23/2007] Verify your Lodging InformationHello Blitz Home Builders! As the build draws near, we need to finalize lodging arrangements. Please take a moment to log in to the site and make sure that your Arrival Date, Departure Date and Need for Lodging entries are correct. We need this information to be up to date by May 1st. On May 1st, if you have requested lodging , you will receive an email invoice for the remaining lodging total (your first night is covered in the registration fee). We will base this amount off of the days you have indicated on the website registration, so accurate information is crucial. The Arrival Date is the date you plan on arriving in Portland, and the following day will be your first full work day. If you have requested lodging, this will be your first night of lodging. The Departure Date is the date you plan on leaving Portland, and not working a full day on the site. The night before will be your last night of lodging, if requested. Example: If your Arrival Date is June 25th, and Departure Date is June 30th. We will assume you will be lodging 5 nights and working 4 full days. You would be billed for 4 additional nights of lodging since one of the 5 nights is already included in the registration fee. To update your lodging information, simply visit the Portland page on the website at http://blitzhomebuilders.org/builds/Portland07/portland.cfm and click the "Register/Update Registration for the Portland Build" link on the left to make any final changes. The room fees have come out to $21 per person per night. We have tried to make this process as simple as possible. Again, please keep checking the Portland page on the website for more information on the build! Thanks for your support, Blitz Home Builders Planning Committee [2/22/2007] Registration for Blitz Build 2007 is now open. It’s official, the Blitz Build for 2007 is in Portland, Oregon.Portland Habitat for Humanity is very excited to host this blitz build and would like us to build 3 houses with them. The dates for the build are Friday, June 22nd through Saturday, June 30th. Sunday the 24th will be a day off. There will be some final cleanup and a dedication ceremony on the morning of Saturday the 30th. House Leads and Crew Leads will be expected to be on site on Thursday the 21st so they should plan on arriving on Wednesday the 20th. There are some changes this year which are based on the comments we received at last year's general meeting in Wichita. First, we will be requiring a non-refundable $70 registration fee for each participant. This will be applied to a portion of your hotel expense, T-Shirt, and some administrative costs necessary to make this event happen. Second, registrations will be handled electronically through our Web site, http://www.blitzhomebuilders.org/builds/Portland07/portland.cfm . This will be the only way to register for the Portland build. You should have received an email a few days ago that contained your user ID and password. You will need them to register for the build. Being a registered Blitz Home Builder volunteer does not register you for the Portland build -- you must specifically register for Portland in order to have a guaranteed spot at the build and a room at the hotel. Third, you will have the option to pay fees online using the PayPal secure transaction servers. You will not need to have a PayPal account in order to pay by credit card. Using this feature will immediately guarantee your registration and help us deal more efficiently with the shear volume of work that needs to be done. If you choose to pay by check, make your check out to Blitz Home Builders and mail to: Registrar 2007 7259 W. Quail Ave. Glendale, AZ 85308 We would like your registration for the build completed by Sunday, March 11th. Space may be limited so registrations will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis. You are not registered until we have received your deposit. Planning these events takes a lot of time and effort on the part of the Planning Committee. One of the first things we need to know is how many volunteers will be attending in order for us to continue the planning process for lodging and meals. Lodging this year will be at the Days Inn at a cost of $25 or less per person per night. The hotel rooms will be double occupancy. You should plan on approximately $10 per person per day for food. We are working with Portland Habitat for Humanity to get some of our meals provided through donations from local businesses and organizations. Updates with more details on housing, meals, travel, etc. will be made available on our Web site, http://www.blitzhomebuilders.org. Portland Habitat for Humanity does not allow persons under the age of 16 to participate in the build. Persons 16 and 17 years of age will require a parent’s signature on the waiver form and may be restricted in the type of tasks they are permitted to perform (i.e., using power tools and/or being on the roof). If you have questions or encounter problems with the site, please contact us immediately at Registrar@BlitzHomeBuilders.org . Thank you in advance for your continued interest and participation. Your Blitz Home Builders Planning Committee is looking forward to seeing everyone in Portland. Your prompt response is appreciated. Blitz Home Builders The Planning Committee |
